Restaurant Review: Mighty Taco

Does the legendary chain live up to the hype?

Rating: 2.5/ 5.

On Monday, April 16, famous Buffalo franchise Mighty Taco, opened its newest venue right on Jefferson Road, where college students and Henriettans alike could easily access its desirable goods. There’s been a huge fuss about the place ever since people around here heard it was coming out. I had to see what this was all about. Being a California-native, I had never even heard of it.

The restaurant’s overall presentation reminded me of In-N-Out Burger back home, with cars lined up in the drive-thru to order fast food, no matter how long the wait. It was pretty similar inside, as well. The line to order wrapped past the front door to the back of the restaurant. There was about a 17-minute wait from when I got in line to when I received my food, which was much too long to wait for fast food.

I sat down with a couple of friends — fans of the place — and looked over what I ordered: a Super Mighty burrito, the Buffito burrito (no bleu cheese) and a steak roastito. The least impressive was the Buffito, which was nothing more than some chicken and buffalo sauce. The best was the Super Mighty, which actually had some substance.

For the $10 I paid and the amount of food I got, the wait was not worth it. The annoyingly busy, crowded, smelly and loud atmosphere only compounded this. As a whole, the place was disappointing, considering how many good things I’d heard about it. Nothing stood out about the food or made it unique. I did appreciate that the kitchen was wide open, and that the workers donned colorful T-shirts. The one thing I absolutely loved about it was the actual meat; it’s difficult to get a good fast food place that uses real steak and real chicken, or real anything for that matter. But that alone was not enough for me to want to go back soon.

While it wasn’t bad enough to make me stay away forever, I think I’ll stick with Taco Bell.

Try instead: Taco Bell, John’s Tex Mex, Chipotle.

I don't see why anything but Chipotle is on "Try Instead"
